There have been plenty of iconic cars throughout the years. Many have left a mark because of their aesthetic or their performance, or just their cost, but few have been as beloved as the Honda Civic. This marvel, product of the best that the Japanese auto industry has to offer, has become a cult classic, but also the newer versions of the car have been just as coveted as the original, which is almost unheard of with this type of sports car. But it seems like the time has come to say goodbye to this series and it will be the Honda Civic Type R that will close the chapter.
Released in the summer of 2022, the Honda Civic Type R is the sixth generation of what is arguably the best sports compact car currently available. Unlike other versions of the car, this one is a limited release and will not go to mass production, which will make it even more special for both owners and collectors, many of which are already itching to get their hands on one of these coveted vehicles. The company has also made a choice to not ship it across the pond to the US, so any buyers that want to have one of these, will have to purchase it directly from Asia or Europe and have it shipped at their own expense to the States.
While we do not know if Honda will find a way to continue making them for their Asian market, we do know that they do not plan on releasing any more units than have been advertised in Europe either, so, considering that it will go out of production this year, those who want one better hurry up.
The last Honda Civic Type R, a nice farewell to an iconic car
While this is a sad milestone both for the industry and for Honda, the company understands that there is a following to this car and they are giving it the sendoff it deserves. When they announced the end of sales of the Type R in Europe they did so by announcing as well the introduction of a very striking limited edition. Like most versions of this car, it will not be discreet, but they have made it even easier to recognize thank to the characteristic Championship White color with red accents that Honda uses on its Type R models to pay tribute to its first Formula 1 GP-winning single-seater.
Apart from the quite defining colors, the new version of the car will feature carbon fiber elements, and when the doors are opened, a light with the ‘Type R’ logo will be able to be seen projected onto the ground. Maybe a bit of an overkill, but fans do love those bespoke details that remind them that they have something special.
A total of 40 units will be produced throughout Europe and will be accompanied by a commemorative gift box
The new Honda Civic Type R is available in five body colors, which are Sonic Gray Pearl, Cristal Black Pearl, Rally Red, Championship White, and Racing Blue Pearl. The inside is mainly covered in red suede, with stainless steel pedals and the gearshift knob. Under the hood, it features a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with VTEC technology that produces 329 horsepower and 420 Nm of maximum torque. Overall a proper sendoff to a car that has revolutionized the way the industry sees compact sports cars.
“The industry is changing, and our model range is having to evolve with it in accordance with European legislation,“ Hannah Swift, a Honda executive, said in a statement. “However, Type R has always been Honda’s ultimate expression of our passion for driving excitement, and we look forward to celebrating its heritage in the weeks and months ahead.”
