There are many well-know supermarkets in the US that operate nationwide, and while these are convenient since they give the same service across the country, each region has its own chains that locals prefer because of the cultural familiarity. One of the most famous supermarket chains across the East Coast is Wegmans, although they might be mostly unknown to the rest of the country, they are now expanding by popular demand and bringing their charm and competition to other places where companies like Walmart or Aldi have had a stronghold for the past few years.

While these massive chains have triumphed because of their low prices for years, now that tariffs are becoming a great equalizer and driving prices up everywhere consumers are looking for other ways to differentiate the chains, and it seems like the ones that are thriving are those who can cater to customers in a more personalized way.

Founded in 1916, by brothers Walter and John Wegman in Rochester, New York, Wegmans has been a staple of the community for 100 years. This is where they continue to have their base of operations, and being as close as they are to their customer base makes them successful in a very special way, and that is that towns clamor to have a location in their area. The demand has been loud and constant, and it is clear the company is finally listening to this demand and are now opening two brand-new locations, one in Rockville, Maryland, and the other in Norwalk, Connecticut.

But those are not the only locations that they have opened in 2025, earlier this year they also opened a store in Lake Grove, New York as part of a bigger push to expand into new territories where shoppers have been begging for a Wegmans of their own. And it is no wonder that customers have been asking for more locations, Wegmans is known for its standout customer service, sleek store layouts, and quality products.

The Wegmans new supermarket openings in 2025

They operate over 110 stores across nine states: New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, but their reach is growing and their locations are becoming more and more spread out.

For now, Rockville, Maryland is getting their own store very soon, in fact it is set to open next week, and Connecticut will also be joining the family as well with Norwalk becoming home to the state’s first-ever location on July 23. But they are also trying to expand to other regions of the country and seeing if their East Coast charm works elsewhere, and that place is North Carolina, where the company is looking to open a new location in Charlotte in late 2026. A bit closer to home, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is preparing for its debut store as well, with a massive 115,000-square-foot space being built as part of a larger mixed-use development.

The Pittsburgh story is a long one as locals have been asking for a Wegmans there for over three decades. Dan Aken, the chain’s VP of Real Estate and Store Planning, told FOX Business that they have had “thousands of requests for a Wegmans in the Pittsburgh region since we opened our first store in Pennsylvania more than 30 years ago.” This alone proves the popularity of the chain better than anything else could.

On their official website, Wegmans has a “Future Store Locations” section that confirms more spots coming soon. Holly Springs is listed there, with a date still up in the air, and Pittsburgh is officially marked for early next year. Given how the new market works, it is a testament to their resilience that they have managed not just to last, but to do so with more demand and steady growth, which is a strategy that will likely continue to be invaluable through the years.
