Companies like Samsung have been thinking about how to expand their presence in the U.S for years now, and although their factories in Asia have served them well for years, there are more and more restrictions that prevent them from being as efficient as possible when it comes to some parts that are necessary for our technology to work. The pandemic put into perspective how supply chain issues can make the economy almost collapse, and the tariffs implemented by Trump are only driving the point home even further.
One of the ways that Samsung is choosing to improve their global standing is by opening a massive new chip factory in the US and they have chosen Taylor, Texas as their base. The project started in 2024 and is backed by a hefty $17 billion investment to ensure the best chance for success possible.
The new Samsung Texas project, a boost for the local economy
Dave Porter, who heads up the Williamson County Economic Development Association, said the facility should create around 2,000 jobs. “Many of which will be well-paid,” and if early listings are to be believed, he is not exaggerating. In the last few weeks, Samsung has already posted openings for a wide range of roles, everything from Accounting Assistants and Architects to Software Developers and specialized engineers and the pay for these roles is nothing to scoff at, with some positions starting at $90,000 and climbing up to $160,000 depending on experience and job scope.
This is not the only factory that Samsung has in Texas, as they already have a facility in Austin, located about 30 minutes away by car. Both of these locations are meant to be working in tandem, offering both employment and training opportunities to Central Texans. As the company explained in a press release when announcing the new factory:
“At Samsung Austin Semiconductor, we’re committed to creating a bright future and a more prosperous community. It’s a commitment to putting people first – one that drives us to find ways to combine innovation with opportunities. Each new manufacturing facility we build helps us develop technologies that will unlock the experiences of tomorrow, and allows us to make a difference in peoples’ lives today. The new facility we’re building in Taylor, Texas is an extension of our ongoing commitment. We believe the new site in Taylor will bridge our nearly 30-year history in Central Texas with a hopeful future full of possibility. Bringing new jobs and valuable training opportunities, our investment in Taylor—Samsung’s largest-ever in the U.S.— will build supply chain resilience of crucial logic chips while contributing to the development of the local community.”
The factory will not be fully up and running until late 2026, but some of the posts are already being filled to ensure that they can hit the ground running as soon as possible, and those in charge seem to be happy with the development. In fact, Michele Gaze, a spokesperson for Samsung, told MySA that things are going “satisfactorily” on the construction front and no major delays are expected.
The Taylor factory is being built with the future in mind and Samsung says it being designed for producing advanced chips that will fuel things like 5G networks, AI systems, and high-performance computing. This kind of cutting-edge production means the company can stay ahead of the curve in industries that are growing fast and by building in a place where engineers and other technical posts are available and easy to hire and train as the technology advances is a very smart move that will likely allow the company to remain at the forefront of innovation, which in the tech world is the key for both survival and longevity.
