If you picked up a box of New Mexico Piñon Coffee capsules at Walmart, Costco, or Target, there’s something you should know.

The company is recalling one of its coffee pod products after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) flagged a packaging issue that could lead to food contamination. In plain terms, ink could end up in your coffee.

What is all this fuss about? Some Dark Piñon Single Serve Cups, the ones made for Keurig machines, weren’t sealed correctly. And because of that, now the ink from the lid might leak into the coffee while you’re making it.

The ink is technically food-safe and edible, but who really wants that in their cup?

The affected pods were sold across the United States, and the recall specifically applies to the 10-count boxes with lot number 251749 and a “best by” date of May 8, 2026. If that matches what’s in your pantry, it’s best not to drink it.

What the FDA thinks about this

The good news is that there haven’t been any reports of anyone getting sick. And the FDA still stepped in to prevent everyone and let the people know, fast, that the product didn’t meet safety standards because of the sealing issue.

Even though the ink is approved for food contact, it’s not meant to mix with what you’re drinking. That’s why New Mexico Piñon Coffee is asking customers to stop using it, just in case, and also why Walmart, Costco, and Target took the product out.

It’s a voluntary recall, which means the company acted quickly to get ahead of any potential problems.

What’s New Mexico Piñon Coffee doing?

New Mexico Piñon Coffee, you know it’s not your average cup of joe. The brand offers a variety of bold flavors, the local favorites. And people who love it really love it. That’s why the company didn’t waste time, and they started the recall in July after spotting the issue and got the FDA involved right away.

This only affects one product: the Dark Piñon Single Serve Cups, 10-count, made for Keurig machines. If your box doesn’t have the lot code 251749 and that May 2026 date, you’re good to go.

But if it does, it’s better to be safe and stop using it.

This is the way the brand assures their customers they care about the product and the consumer.

By taking action immediately, they prevent any further consequences for the people. And although the ink can actually be eaten, it is better to avoid any risk. But, by being transparent and admitting this mistake they also reinforce the customers trust.

Did you buy one of these boxes? Here’s what you should do

This is the moment when you go to your kitchen cabinet and you check your coffee stash. If you bought a box of New Mexico Piñon Coffee pods at Walmart, Target, or Costco, flip it over and look for lot number 251749. If that’s the one you’ve got, don’t brew it.

You can toss it, or better yet, return it to the store for a refund. Since this is a recall from the brand, most locations will take it back, no questions asked. If you’re not sure or want to talk to someone, you can call the company directly at 505-298-1964.

So far, there’s no harm has been reported, and this doesn’t affect other products from the brand. But it’s a reminder that anything we put in our bodies deserves to be watched closely.

If you know of anyone around you that drinks New Mexico Piñon Coffee, let them know. Most of us drink coffee every day at home (and even more than one cup a day). Better double-check that we’re really only drinking coffee.
