With the REAL ID coming into effect now and most residents in the US needing to renew their driver’s licenses and IDs to ensure that they are in compliance with federal regulations, many states are changing their policies and methods of renewal to make it easier and more tech friendly for those who are embarking in this process. While many may be thinking it is about time, government processes take time, as they should, and it is not as easy as creating a new platform, as it needs to be secure and as “hack proof” as they can make it.

Texas is one of the states that has decided to improve their online offerings and from June 2025 onwards, Texas residents will be required to use a new digital platform to renew their driver’s license. The state government announced that the Texas for Texas (TxT) digital assistant will be the only authorized system for this process and will replace the Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) old online portal, which was discontinued on May 31, 2025.

The new platform is meant to increase security and improve user experience, as it has been conceived with more modern ways of using technology and not as a patchwork of procedures that are updated over time. The fact that it is new will allow it to be supported better in more devices and browsers, improving speed and functionality overall.

The new Texas portal to renew your driver’s license and ID

Although driver’s licenses and IDs will not be the only official procedures that were handled by DPS and that will now be done via TxT, they are the ones that are more likely to be done this summer due to the changes in state ID. Some of the other procedures that will be now done through TxT are:

  • Renewing a driver’s license or ID card.
  • Changing the address on a license or ID card.
  • Replacing lost or stolen cards.
  • Viewing and updating emergency contacts.
  • Vehicle registration
  • Boat licenses
  • Other Parks, Motor Vehicles, and Regulation procedures

Regardless of any other previous portals that they may have been using, residents in the state should all be taking steps to get an account with this new service, as it will come in handy and any glitches are better resolved when there is no need to hurry. Thanks to this new platform, users will be able to access multiple services from a single location, which will make the process easier, faster, and more secure, but only if the account is properly set up and contains all the updated information on the residents.

To ensure that there are no issues with your account, the system will demand that you provide all the basic information such as email address, phone number, Social Security number, and a valid Texas state ID to get started with your TxT account. Do remember to update your information periodically if it changes as otherwise it can cause a bit of a bureaucratic nightmare.

Once your new TxT account is set up, you will be able to use it to begin any of the processes allowed by the system, including renewing your driver’s license or state ID, but there are also other processes regarding state identification that you will be able to do as well thanks to this new account and it involves other documents issued by state agencies

Beginning in June 2025, all driver’s license transactions must be completed exclusively through TxT. This is part of the push that the State of Texas is making to modernize its services and offer greater convenience to its residents. The state government has emphasized that this transition will improve system efficiency and reduce waiting times, which will help both employees of the state and residents alike.
