Flying with kids? Welcome to airport security chaos. You have probably either done it or witnessed it: wrestling bags, collapsing strollers, parents tossing out snacks like peace offerings, and just trying not to lose their minds. It’s rough. But hey, there might finally be a break coming.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) just rolled out a new policy through the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) that’s all about making flying easier for families. It’s called Families Take Flight, and the idea is pretty simple: give families their own dedicated security lane at the airport.

The program started as a pilot at the Orlando International Airport, which made perfect sense. Why? It’s a major gateway to Disney and one of the busiest family airports in the country. After seeing how well it worked, the TSA is expanding it nationwide.

But that’s not all. This new initiative also brings updates to TSA PreCheck, including discounts and even free access for military families, Gold Star Families, and veterans registered through Veterans Affairs (VA). Even active-duty military in uniform can breeze through security thanks to support from the United States Department of Defense.

Flying with kids? Here’s what it means for you

If you’re flying with your kids, you’ll no longer have to battle it out in the regular TSA line. Instead, you’ll be able to head straight to a separate security lane made just for families. That means fewer crowds, less waiting, and maybe even a chance to catch your breath before the gate.

More people can now use TSA PreCheck for less (or free)

The TSA is also making it easier for people to enroll in TSA PreCheck, which lets you skip the worst parts of security, like taking off shoes and belts or digging out laptops. And now, there are extra perks:

  • Families get $15 off their TSA PreCheck sign-up.
  • Spouses of military service members can apply with $25 off.
  • Active-duty military in uniform can sign up for free using their United States Department of Defense ID.
  • Gold Star Families (those who’ve lost a loved one in service) also qualify for free access.
  • And veterans with disabilities enrolled in the VA system are now eligible for PreCheck without paying a thing.

In short, if you’ve served or you’re raising the next generation while trying to get through airport security, the TSA wants to make your life a little easier.

Honor Lane is expanding

If you’ve traveled recently, you may have noticed Honor Lane, a special TSA lane for military members in uniform. It’s already in place at 11 airports, but that’s just the beginning. The TSA plans to bring it nationwide in the coming months.

Even more exciting? According to Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, the TSA is now actively considering getting rid of the liquids rule for carry-ons. That could mean no more tiny shampoo bottles or tossing your water bottle at the checkpoint.

Also, some airports have already stopped making TSA PreCheck travelers take off their shoes. It might seem small, but when you’re juggling kids, a stroller, and your sanity, not having to untie your sneakers feels like a win.

Easier for everyone

Air travel isn’t exactly relaxing, especially with kids, but it’s about to get more manageable.

Thanks to Families Take Flight, the expansion of TSA PreCheck, and the rollout of Honor Lane, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and TSA are taking real steps to make flying less of a headache for families, those who serve, and the regulars travelers that also share the long lines.

Whether you’re off to visit grandparents, heading to basic training, or just trying to survive your toddler’s first flight, help is finally on the way.
