Every year more and more companies are being held accountable for their shoddy business practices, and while some dislike the number of class action lawsuits that are ongoing and dismiss them as “everybody trying to make a quick buck” it is good that we are trying to correct the malfeasance of companies and get compensated if we were affected. Two of the suits that are ongoing are against Family Dollar and FuboTV, which were involved in coffee scams and data breaches respectively.

The Family Dollar coffee scandal

The Family Dollar settlement comes after customers of the retailer noticed that one of their popular coffee brands, specifically Chestnut Hill brand ground coffee, was falsely advertising. According to the claims made in the lawsuit, Family Dollas’s advertisements claimed that Chestnut Hill brand ground coffee made more coffee cups per container than it actually did, which means that it cost more per cup than it advertised.

While this might be subjective considering that not every machine takes the same amount of coffee to make a cup, the claim was substantiated enough that, even though Family Dollar did not admit they did anything wrong, they did settle the case. One key difference between this settlement and others from class action suits is that Family Dollar is not offering cash in return to their customers.

What they are doing instead is offering a free coupon for a 9.6-ounce container of Chestnut Hill coffee for those who purchased one of the brand’s containers between January 1, 2019, and April 15, 2025. For those who do not keep receipts, you do not need proof of purchase, you just need to file a claim and you will be included in the settlement automatically.

Another difference with other settlements is that as part of the agreement, Family Dollar also has to change the way they label these coffee containers and from now on the company is either going to have to remove the number of cups from the can to avoid false advertisement claims, or test it in a laboratory to ensure that the results are accurate. A small price to pay for Family Dollar but a win for consumers.

For those that wish to submit their claim, there are a few dates that you will need to take into account to ensure that you receive the voucher.

  • Claim deadline: July 21, 2025
  • Deadline to object or opt out (applicable if you decide that you want to pursue a bigger case later on with different supporting evidence): July 14, 2025
  • Final hearing: July 21, 2025

The FuboTV account data breach

This one will apply to anyone that has ever used the sports-heavy streaming service, no matter if it was on a proprietary account or through someone else’s. According to the lawsuit, FuboTV allegedly violated the Video Privacy Protection Act by sending user data to companies like Facebook and Google without consent, and for that they are being punished with a $3.4 million settlement. Since the sale of information has been regulated for decades now and those who used the accounts did not consent to their data being shared in any capacity, not even anonymized and repackaged, the company committed some serious violations.

Allegedly the company has been doing this from the beginning, and only stopped this practice once the settlement was under way, so if you used he service through any account before May 29, 2025 you will be included in the lawsuit and will be able to receive a portion of the settlement.

Here are the important dates that you need to take into account to participate in this settlement:

  • File your claim by: September 12, 2025
  • Opt out or submit objections by: August 28, 2025
  • Final hearing date: October 6, 2025
