A new recall is making the rounds, this time courtesy of General Motors (GM), who is advising drivers of almost 600,000 of their vehicles to be careful and bring in their vehicles as soon as possible due to engine problems that could lead to serious damage or even complete engine failure.
While most recalls only affect a few hundred units, this particular instance is a big recall, including 597,630 vehicles in total, comprised of 126,027 Cadillacs, 174,208 Chevrolets, and 297,395 GMCs, all of them powered by GM’s 6.2-liter V8 gas engine, which appears to have a flaw in its internal parts.
The new GM recall that is causing concerns for drivers
The issue was flagged in a notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on April 24, when GM figured out that some of the main components of the engine, like the crankshaft and connecting rods might have been manufactured improperly.
Since these are some of the most important pieces that make an engine work properly, having them malfunction could, in the best of cases, have the engine not start, but in the worst case scenario, have it stop working in the middle of the road and cause an accident. Luckily, they are built with some failsafe measures, so there are some early warning signs that drivers should be on the lookout for if they own one of the affected models.
According to both the recall notice and GM, you might hear “a knocking or banging sound from the engine,” see the check engine light pop on, or notice that the car’s performance seems off, like jerky shifting, sluggish acceleration, or feeling like the engine is not delivering power the way it should, before it completely breaks down.
If you notice any of these signs, you will want to pull over and stop driving before the signs get worse and you end up stranded in the middle of the road or in a terrible accident. Pay special attention if your car is one of the models featured in the list below, as all of them feature the same engine:
- 2021 to 2024 Cadillac Escalade
- 2021 to 2024 Cadillac Escalade ESV
- 2021 to 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
- 2021 to 2024 Chevrolet Suburban
- 2021 to 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe
- 2021 to 2024 GMC Sierra 1500
- 2021 to 2024 GMC Yukon
- 2021 to 2024 GMC Yukon XL
Considering the large number of vehicles affected, GM will be starting to send out letters letting owners know about the recall starting out on June 9, 2025, but they are already encouraging those who have any issues or own any of the potentially damaged vehicles to take it into a certified dealership, be it Cadillac, Chevrolet, or GMC, for a free engine check as soon as possible.
This is especially true for anyone who has already had engine damage, as, instead of taking it to a regular mechanic who may not know what the problem is or how to fix it, the accredited dealership will know exactly what happened and will make any repairs necessary or swap it out free of charge. They will also take care of some preventative measures for your engine is not one of the ones that have been damaged, like giving your car a new oil fill cap, switching to a thicker oil, changing the oil filter, and updating the owner’s manual, all for free to make up for the inconvenience.
For any other questions, GM has stated that customers can reach out to their manufacturer directly using the following numbers: Cadillac owners can call 1-800-333-4223, Chevrolet owners can call 1-800-222-1020, and GMC owners can call 1-800-462-8782. Make sure to reference recall number N252494000 when you call.
