Laura Varo‘s here to save you from the heat this summer!

When the heat wave hits, experts recommend staying inside the house and protecting yourself from the direct contact of the sun. It sounds easy until it is so hot inside that you start wondering if you’re slowly turning into soup. The air conditioner is humming, the fan is spinning its heart out… and you’re still sweating.

The truth is, surviving a summer heat wave isn’t about buying the latest cooling gadget or running your air conditioner into overtime. I mean, you could, but it will cost you a fortune, and Mother Nature won’t be so happy about it either… it’s about making your home and habits work smarter.

That’s where Laura Varo comes in. She’s got these 5 small, clever tricks that actually make a difference—no fancy gadgets, no big spending. Sometimes, it’s the tiny things that save you when the heat just won’t quit.

Laura Varo’s 5 tricks to combat heat waves

  1. Keep yourself hydrated: First, water. “Stay hydrated throughout the day with cool water. A good option is to use thermal bottles.” Sounds basic, but in this heat, you need more than you think. Add some ice to your water bottle, and it will become your best friend—game changer.
  2. Mop with cold water regularly. The floor cools down, and that freshness drifts up into the room. Laura’s advice is to “wet the floor occasionally to cool the room.” You can add drops of essential oils (mint, citrus, or lavender) and it will get you in a better mood.
  3. Adapt your routine: Stop letting your appliances sabotage you. “Run the washing machine and dishwasher at night, as they generate a lot of heat when in operation,” she says. You’ll keep your home cooler in the day and maybe even shave a little off your electricity bill if your rates drop after dark.
  4. Watch your windows: “During the day, close the windows and lower the blinds in rooms where the sun shines directly in, and at night, do the opposite: open them to cool the house down.” Your windows and blinds are your best friends in summer if you treat them right.
  5. Try the Egyptian method: This last trick was used in hostels, and the reason is that it is effective: “Use linen or cotton sheets and, to cool them down, spray them with cool water before going to bed.” You’ll be asleep before you even realize it’s still hot outside.

When Small Changes Bring Big Relief

Beating a heat wave in summer doesn’t mean using the air conditioner all day. If you have one, turn it up for a bit while the blinds are down; you will be surprised how long you can maintain a fresh temperature all day long.

Laura Varo knows how knows how to handle those days where it seems the heat is going to make you crazy. And t’s not about big changes, just a few smart moves. Rethinking your routine and maybe making a new one.

And I know some people think it’s difficult (because I do): Keeping the windows closed and the blinds down all day can make your home feel sad, and even make you feel a bit trapped. But the heat wave won’t last forever. After trying these five tricks, I bet you’ll feel much better at home, even if it’s a little darker. Better that than feeling dehydrated from all the direct sunlight pouring in.

Best part? These little habits work year-round. They keep your home comfy and your days less stressful.

Summer might just be a couple of easy tweaks away. And Laura’s got you covered.
