The U.S. state budget is going through a complex situation, as inflation is becoming more and more part of the current reality, therefore, in order to solve this situation the State of New York, starting in October, will deliver the stimulus checks to those applicants. The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance will be able to formulate the payments without any problem through Form IT-201, as long as they comply with the certain requirements that are demanded. Along these same lines, Kathy Hochul brought about the creation of these checks, thanks also to the support of the New York State Legislature. Read on to learn more about these stimulus checks, as well as how to apply.

New stimulus checks for New Yorkers to be delivered in October

New York State will begin handing out more than 8 million stimulus checks in October aimed at easing the economic pressure generated by inflation. These one-time payments seek to refund a portion of the excess sales tax that state residents paid over the past year. To receive the benefit, citizens must have filed their Form IT-201 state income tax return for the 2023 tax year and not have been listed as a dependent on another return. In addition, those who only partially resided in New York during that year will not be eligible to receive the payment.

Stimulus checks will begin arriving in mid-October.

As reported by the state Department of Taxation and Finance, payments will be made automatically to all qualified taxpayers, with no additional application required.

Information recorded on tax returns already filed will be used to verify eligibility and to mail checks.

Due to the large volume of recipients, mailings will be distributed over several weeks beginning in mid-October, with no specific order by ZIP code or region.

Stimulus checks range from $150 to $400.

The amount of the rebate will depend on the level of adjusted gross income and marital status of each individual. Those filing as single, head of household or married filing separately and whose income does not exceed $75,000 will receive $200; if their income is between $75,000 and $150,000, the amount will be $150.

On the other hand, married couples filing jointly and qualified surviving spouses with incomes under $150,000 will get $400, while those earning between $150,000 and $300,000 will get $300.

In addition, the state government urged those who have changed their address after filing their 2023 tax return – or who have not yet done so – to update their information through an Online Services Individual Account, to ensure the check arrives at the correct address.

Customer Service Center representatives will not have access to specific information about the delivery status of each check.

First inflation rebate in New York history

This program marks the first inflation rebate in New York’s history and was included within the approved state budget for the 2025-2026 fiscal period.

The agreement came after negotiations between Governor Kathy Hochul and the state legislature, which earmarked $2 billion for the initiative. Although some see the plan as a necessary support to counteract the increase in the cost of living, others have pointed out that these funds could have been used to compensate for previous federal cuts, and have even questioned whether the disbursement seeks to strengthen the political support of the governor on the eve of her reelection campaign.

How do I know if I am eligible for the check?

You are eligible for a refund check if, for tax year 2023, you:

  • filed Form IT-201, New York State Resident Income Tax Return;
  • reported income within the qualifying thresholds below; and
  • were not claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return

When will I get my check?

We will begin mailing refund checks to eligible taxpayers in mid-October of 2025. Over 8 million New Yorkers will receive refunds, and this large volume of checks will be mailed over a multiple week period. You may receive your check sooner or later than your neighbors, as mailings are not based on zip code or region. We cannot provide a specific delivery schedule, and our Contact Center representatives will not have additional information on the status of your check.

For all other information related to checks, i.e., specific amounts and deadlines, please refer to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance website.
