Car recalls are surprisingly common despite the high safety ratings most of them hold. The reason does not usually have anything to do with the overall car’s performance, but with a specific part that was manufactured wrong or works differently on the road after a time than it did in testing. But his new recall by Ford and Lincoln may be a bit different.
Not to alarm anyone, the cars still work perfectly, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) thought it would be best to issue two recall notices on some specific models of these companies in order to solve the problem before it actually causes an issue.
The issue affects more than 280,000 Ford and Lincoln vehicles which have been already recalled by Ford because of some issues with the car’s 360-degree view camera. In this case, the cameras “may not display a rearview image when the vehicle is placed in reverse”, which is not a safety concern since the cars should still be able to be parked without any problems using mirrors, but if customers rely on this technology to see things like small children behind the vehicle or to make sure that nothing will damage their vehicle, it could cause them some trouble.
We are going to tell you which models of cars are being recalled because of this issue in particular, but if you are in doubt on whether or not your vehicle is affected by this or any other recall you can check the NHTSA’s database for any outstanding recall notices that apply to you by just imputing your VIN into it. That will automatically tell you if your car has any recall notices pending or if you are in the clear.
The Ford and Lincoln models that have been recalled
The main recalls include certain model years of the Ford Bronco, as well as certain models of the Ford Expedition, Lincoln MKC, Lincoln Navigator, Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450. These were the first models that were signaled out in the April 24 recall that was issued by the NHTSA.
The complete list of cars recalled this time around is:
- 2015 Ford Expedition
- 2015 Ford F-250
- 2015 Ford F-350
- 2015 Ford F-450
- 2015 Lincoln MKC
- 2015 Lincoln Navigator
- 2022 Ford Bronco
- 2023 Ford Bronco
So if you have one of these vehicles, you will likely be contacted after May 5 to take your car in for repairs to an authorized dealership. If any other vehicles are found to be impacted by the same issue, a new recall will be issued and the company will send out a new notification informing the next batch of affected drivers.
This is not the first or only recall Ford has issued in the last few months, they have had at least two others, one of them issued on April 23 involving some of their vehicles having a a faulty terminal header connector in their “rearview camera printed circuit board,” which causes a blank or distorted image. This recall is slightly different, but still has the same effect, so Ford will also replace these cameras for free and will notify affected drivers so that they can take their vehicles into a dealership.
Reading these notices can be hard, as we may not want to think about the ways in which our vehicles are unsafe, but it is better to be safe than sorry and to know what issues our vehicles have before they become a problem for us as owners. Checking regularly with the NHTSA and looking for the VIN numbers of any car you own may save you a lot of headaches.
