The Full Moon comes around roughly once a month, and for those of us that know nothing about astronomy, we just enjoy looking at it and appreciate the extra light that shines from the sky at night. But there is a lot more to Full Moons than just its practical description, as we orbit around the Sun and the Moon orbits around us, there are different types of Moons and some of them even have names to differentiate them according to the Lunar calendar, and in June 2025, we will have one of these special Moons called Strawberry Moon.
The mechanics of a Full Moon are always the same, they happen when the Moon is located opposite the sun, fully illuminated, and can be seen in its entirety from our planet. As we all know, the moon goes through different phases due to its motion around Earth and it takes approximately 28 days to complete cycle during which it goes through the New Moon, first quarter, Full Moon, and last quarter phases. In June 2025, the Full Moon will occur on Wednesday the 11th.
In many cultures the Moon has been venerated and seen as a sign, especially he Full Moon as it truly does have an impact on Earth regardless of personal beliefs. The Full Moon can affect human behavior, sleep, and even mood, with many people reporting feeling more restless or having intense dreams during this phase. Many medical professionals backed by statistics would also confirm that there are a lot more incidents during a Full Moon, although that could have something to do with the increased visibility allowing for more activity to go on at night.
But although most studies are inconclusive and cannot prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Full Moon affects more than the tides, it remains an important marker and a very visual representation of the changes in the universe.
The June Strawberry Moon
The June Full Moon is popularly known as the “Strawberry Moon,” a name that originates from the indigenous peoples of North America. These cultures used the lunar phases as a natural calendar, and the June Full Moon coincided with the wild strawberry harvest, an important moment marking the beginning of summer. Most people that do not know the history of the name would assume that the color of this particular Moon somehow changes to a pinkish hue (as it sometimes happens) but in this case it does not, and maintains its usual brightness and color, although because of the position of the Earth in relation to the Sun it can sometimes appear more golden or orange when it appears near the horizon.
Viewing the Strawberry Moon will not be hard, as it will be seen just like any other Full Moon, but for those who do not want to miss the entire scene, as we have stated the June 2025 Strawberry Moon will be on Wednesday, June 11 and, in New York, the Moon will appear over the eastern horizon around 8:32 p.m. and will remain visible until dawn the following day.
For those who want a better view of the sky, going as high as possible is always step one, although if you have the chance to escape the city and the light pollution that it brings, you will be amazed at how much more detail you can see not just from the Moon, but from the sky as a whole. It is definitely a different experience worth pursuing at least once if you have not seen a Full Moon surrounded by the entire firmament.
